Science Experiment ~ Fishy Behaviors ~

Sissy and I have been using Apologia's Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day for her Science this year!
She is LOVING it!
I love that she is enjoying it so much.
The way that the book is set up is that we read a few pages and then their is an experiment or activity.

So far we have done almost everyone that is suggested.
This time I had to think about it...

We have been learning about fish that live in different regions and how they migrate to warm water to give birth and return to colder water to feed.

So, the project called for us to get a fish and record the difference in breathing and activity in warm water vs cold water.
The suggested temperatures is what made me scratch my head.
The warm water was supposed to be at least 140 degrees...

How is this poor fish supposed to survive waters at that temp?

Then the cold water is supposed to be 40 degrees!!
I don't know who was more worried Sissy or the Fish???
She kept taking the fish out to "check" on it!
After the project was over Alyssa decided to keep the fish and see how long it lives.

Poor thing was already floating on its side.
We bought a Guppy and I told Alyssa not to name it.
That would make loosing it easier.
We did the experiment on Wednesday and so far the crazy thing is still hanging on.
I am not sure how long it will survive, but I will definitely let you know when it goes to fishy heaven so that you can send the appropriate condolences to Alyssa.
LOL

Homeschooling sure is interesting!

Here are some other school things Sissy has been working on.

She made clay and molded these items for her Ocean Box.
I show you a picture of that soon.
The pyramid looking thing is actually a ziggurat.
It is a temple that was built by the Sumerians and used for worship and a meeting place.
I love homeschooling!

Science Projects & Garden Update

This year Alyssa is LOVING her Science!
Today she did an experiement on water....
Which is heavier Cold or Hot Water???
She put hot water in the container.

Then she added blue food coloring.
Then she put ice water in a paper cup (Thank You Nana for the cups!)
...and put Yellow food coloring in it!

Then she poked a hole in the bottom of the paper cup and added the cold water to the hot water.

You cant tell from the picture but it was obvious which water was heavier because of the color difference. The top of the container stayed blue and the bottom turned yellow and then Green as the waters mixed.

Then we switched it and watched the hot water stay at the top of the container as she added it.

She guessed Hot water was heavier, but then she found out that cold water is heavier! I am loving that she was able to SEE the results! It really was a fun and EASY science experiment. She recorded the whole thing in her notebook!!

Also, all of this rain has been GREAT!!
Look at my garden...
These are my little bitty Green Peppers!

My Lettuce is getting HUGE!!
It has Quadrupled in size since it was planted!

This is my Squash. I just planted these seeds 2 weeks ago!!

And these are my tomato plants! They are BLOOMING, which means I will soon have little red tomato's!! I cant wait!
This garden has been GREAT!!
I am just about to start the next part of it! I have been reading about rotation planting.
The point of that is so that everthing isn't ready all at once. It keeps you from wasting your harvest!

So far, so good! Also, the weeds have been minimal.
I am LOVING my raised bed! It makes it easier to pull the weeds too!

Our First Day of School & Gardening

When we got home we took a few days before we started school...
Our first day of school field trip was to the Mount Dora Art Museum

After that we started school...

We jumped in feet first and started the experiments!

 Alyssa made "rocket" fuel!
It was sooo cool!

We are loving our new science curriculum.
So far things are going really good.
I started a garden...
I started some of my garden from seeds.

Doesn't it look GREAT?

This is my new Tangerine Tree!

And this is my new Crate Myrtle.
So far things are going pretty good...

More Science Experiments & Life

This weekend I got to go to my very first EVER book signing. It was really neat! I saw Debbie Macomber and she signed a book for me! She is one of my favorite authors. (ONE of... many) I really enjoyed hearing about her life and her inspirations! She was really nice and she was shorter than I expected! LOL

Alyssa and I have been wrapping up the school year and we have been working on lots of science experiements! Some have turned out GREAT and some have Stunk (literally)! She loves all of the hands on stuff. We finished science, but she wanted to learn more about the brain, so... We started next years science. We made brain goop. The experiment called for Blue Cheese.. isnt that gross?? She made a model of the brain and that turned out really GREAT!

I am counting down the days till Detto gets back home!! Only a week left! Yippy!

AND... I got to babysit my wondermus neice Abby today! She is soooo sweet! I just love how clingy she is! She has the most beautiful BLUE eyes! So precious!

Life is good!

More Science Experiments

This week I taught Alyssa about Lungs and Lung Capacity. The experiment was a flop, I guess sometimes they are. Here are the pics. I think they are pretty funny!

The book said the water would stay in the plastic jug when you turn it upside down, and then remove the plate. It went EVERYWHERE!!

I forgot to post the follow-up pics of Alyssa's "Bone Experiment". We soaked the bone in vinegar for several days and then... It was rubbery. The vinegar dissolved all of the calcium in the bone! Strange!
